Promote Social Distancing Measures to Fight Covid-19 Using Weston Handling's Range Of Equipment

As the world's economies re-open after lockdown and return to something resembling normality, we are seeing an increase in demand for our range of roll and reel handing equipment.

5 Top Tips For A Safer Workplace On Forklift Safety Day 2020

Safe systems of working around forklift trucks has never been more important. This year's Forklift Safety Day is highlighting the importance of segregating pedestrians from forklifts to enhance safety. But what if that just isn't possible because forklifts are required to operate in areas that are shared with pedestrians, for example machine operators?

Here are our five top tips for a safer workplace.

1). Get rid of forklifts if you can! If they’re not there, they can’t hurt you… Well OK, maybe you need them, but where possible, consider a less dangerous alternative, such as a pedestrian operated Stacker Truck.

One of our recent commissions included a specialist Reel Turner to lift rolls using a core gripping attachment, avoiding the possibility of damage to the material. The Reel Turner pivots to allow rolls to be picked and placed on their ends, rotating through 90 degrees for loading horizontally onto an unwind stand. The lifting arm also swings laterally to provide maximum flexibility for precision positioning of rolls.

We pleased to announce that Weston Handling has been shortlisted in the Fork Lift Truck Association Awards 2020 in the Innovation category.

The award recognises businesses that have created products or services that have made a fresh, creative or defining contribution to the materials handling industry.

Weston Handling has been included in the ‘Pick of 2020’ shortlist for its unique ACKBelt® anti-crush safety device, which enhances workplace safety by reducing the likelihood of accidents involving lift trucks.

The ACKBelt, which is a registered design and patent-pending, prevents accidents by triggering the truck’s in-built emergency stop if the truck touches a pedestrian or another item of equipment.

A recent health and safety prosecution has highlighted the importance of pedestrian safety around fork lift trucks and other moving machinery.

Following an accident in which a reversing fork lift truck caused serious injuries to a worker, FedEx has been fined £553,000 in Cannock Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The firm was also ordered to pay costs of £10,033.39.

Whilst this case demonstrates the financial cost of workplace accidents, poor health and safety also has a damaging effect on employee morale and productivity, causes reputational damage to companies and can lead to prosecutions for directors and managers who neglect their duties.

Segregating trucks from people is not always possible, particularly where pedestrian trucks are being used to load or unload machines, or where trucks are used on a factory floor.

If trucks need to be used in busy workplaces, where operators and other pedestrians are working in the same space, there is a safety solution that will reduce the risk of a collision between a lift truck and a person, machine or other obstacle.

Why is it called an 'LV Truck'?

The roll cradle is moved to the ' L ' position to allow a roll to be easily moved onto the cradle, then pivots a ' V ' orientation to ensure that the roll is held safely in position for transport and postitioning. Hence the name 'LV' - an elegant solution to ensure safety and ease of use.

What are the advantages of an LV Truck?

The Weston LV Truck is purposed designed to make handling rolls easier and safer. The roll cradle is integrated into the truck, ensuring excellent maneuverability and improving ease of use for the operator. The truck is less cumbersome than a truck with a removable cradle and it is particularly suitable for use in confined spaces, where access to machines is restricted and where there is limited space for loading a roll onto a slitting, coating, printing or laminating machine.
